Laxton Square in the city centre is named after Ray Laxton, a lawyer and former Peterborough mayor who also served on the Peterborough Development Corporation. He helped raise funds for Peterborough District Hospital. He was well respected by people on all sides of the political spectrum. He died in 1981. The square is bounded on two sides by roads (City Road and Northminster), bordering which stand various office blocks. On a third side of the square for many years stood the City Market until closure in 2022. Thus, the square appears to be more of a triangle in shape. It was laid out for pedestrian use and comprised a seating area in a semi-circle bounded by trees. Occasionally the square was used for outdoor events. The covered market closed in 2022 to make way for a new development of up to 10 storeys, comprising 315 dwellings, mostly flats.
